THE
OUTLET
WHY WE
SUPPORT.
Research consistently shows that firefighters and law enforcement officers are more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty (Ruderman Family Foundation). More specifically, firefighter suicide rates are approximately 38% higher than the general U.S. population (Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance; CDC). Among EMS professionals, suicide risk is estimated to be about 40% higher than the general public (CDC / NIOSH).
The impact doesn’t stop with the individual. Chronic stress, untreated PTSD, emotional isolation, and long hours are strongly associated with relationship strain, family breakdown, substance misuse, and burnout. While divorce rates among male firefighters are only slightly higher than the general population, female firefighters experience divorce at rates exceeding 30%, more than three times the national average of roughly 10% for currently divorced adults (peer-reviewed U.S. firefighter marriage studies).
These figures highlight how cumulative occupational stress can quietly erode relationships over time. First responders are often trained to suppress emotion as a survival tool on the job, but without a healthy outlet or supportive community, that suppression can disconnect parents from their families, strain marriages, and fracture homes.
Community support saves lives. When first responders are given space to connect with peers who understand, share their experiences, and process trauma in healthy ways, outcomes change. Peer connection, creative expression, and shared purpose reduce isolation, improve mental health, and help strengthen families, allowing first responders to stay present at home and effective on the job.
Supporting first responders isn’t charity, it’s prevention. It protects families, preserves careers, and helps the people who protect us every day continue showing up whole.
FIRST RESPONDER CHALLENGES.
PARTNERS.
The Outlet is thoughtfully exploring partnerships with individuals and organizations who align with our mission and values.
We prioritize meaningful, authentic relationships over volume, and are seeking partners who believe in the power of connection, creativity, and support for first responders.
If you feel aligned with our mission and see a way to contribute, we’d love to hear from you.
